84. Shoshanna

Shoshanna cried. Sour and suffocating droplets ripped through her tear ducts and trickled down her cheek and neck. This bout of sadness that she could never fill. This void of pain she could never heal. As if a shovel had emptied her heart.

She prayed for so many nights that these senseless crying would stop. That she would quit staring at her white ceiling, tracing the contours of his face as her fingers reach out subconsciously to caress it. Some nights, she comforts herself by lying on her side, back against her pillow imagining that it was him so she could sleep – why deceit herself? Holding on to a heart which will not longer beat with her.

What would she give to stop crying. To stop hurting. Is this fight futile? Is this His will? That she will continue to feel this piercing pain throughout her whole body, her throat and her poor heart. How much longer could her numb herself. Pretending that its normal to wake up with puffy eyes. Living a world of fake laughter when truly she is not happy.

83. Feeling

Most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you.

I was asked a couple of times before what is my favourite song.

And there was no competition in my head. This song has got to win hands down. Bendita Tu Luz. (google it or youtube it to find the song)

What does it mean? Once I asked Carlitos on our way to school and he told me it literally meant ‘blessed is your light’.

Its a happy song, and in my humble opinion, depicting the happiness of love. It just makes me feel all loved and warm inside, figured that this is the emotion one should feel when she falls in love. Everything about him is perfect.

Even when I’m feeling blue, I listen to it. Don’t wanna sound like a loser but Ive said this sooooo many times to the people I just met – I do not have a boyfriend and don’t assume I’d naturally attract one. (oh wait, maybe those were actually kind words!!! Right, so I do sound like a loser now.. BAH!) Kinda gives me hope that he is out there (hidding). I just have to pray for him. This is not that difficult! God hasn’t given up on me ;)

When I desperately need to fall asleep, I put it on repeat and the melodic guitar sound sets me on a dream odyssey. This is one of the many Spanish songs that does not leave a bad after-thought. For most Spanish love songs will some how fire up some bad neutrons in my brain and I will instantly start to tear.

I even learn to play it on the guitar. When I’m pro enough, Id learn how to pluck the solo parts!

Its been stuck in my head. I hum it in the office, when Im having lunch and when Im in the toliet (hee~). Makes me feel so blessed to live life. =)

So here’s a question for you. What is your favourite song and why? What thoughts does it evoke when you sing it? =)

p/s: Dear God, please let me catch Mana live in concert just once? =)

81. Drink More Milk

The current electronic boyfriend never fails to wake me up on time every morning and I caress its body at least 6 times (it’s called snoozing) before rolling out from my warm red-teddy blanket. But today as I got up from my bed to hang my face in front of the mirror, something happened.

My joints made the most alarming crackling sound I ever heard.

“SH*T”…..

So I shall open this entry by encouraging you (and myself) to DRINK MORE MILK!

Boosting calcium intake by drinking milk could reduce healthy adults’ chances of a debilitating bone break. In a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, healthy men and women supplemented with 1,200 mg of calcium per day – the amount in four glasses of milk – reduced their risk of bone fractures by 72 percent.

An international team of researchers from University Hospital Zurich and Dartmouth Medical School divided 930 healthy men and women ages 27 to 80 into two groups for a four-year intervention study. One group was given a placebo, while the other took a daily calcium supplement containing 1,200 mg of calcium daily – the calcium recommendation for adults over the age of 51.

The researchers found that those receiving an additional 1,200 mg of calcium were significantly less likely to have a bone fracture of any sort during the four-year period, including everyday activity fractures (bone breaks that occurred while walking or standing) and seemingly unavoidable accident-related fractures (bone breaks sustained during falls, running, sports injuries or car accidents). In fact, during the four-year intervention, not a single adult receiving calcium experienced a fracture tied to everyday activities – fractures that researchers call “potentially preventable” and more likely linked to bone health.

To sustain the benefits, researchers found that the adults needed to maintain their calcium intakes. After the four-year supplementation period ended, the bone benefits dissipated, underscoring the need to adopt lifelong habits, like drinking milk, to prevent bone loss.

Adult bones continue to grow in density and strength until about age 35. After that, preventing further bone loss is essential. Poor bone health and bone fractures can have negative consequences for adults of all ages, interfering with recreational activities, ability to work or physical capacity to exercise and stay healthy. These adult bone fractures may also be an early sign of risk for osteoporosis – a serious condition of brittle bones afflicting more than 10 million Americans.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend three servings of fat free or lowfat milk each day, providing 90 percent of the recommended daily value of calcium for most adults. Milk is also an excellent source of vitamin D, helping the body absorb this much-needed calcium to help maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Trust me. If you heard what I heard from my body, assuming it’s what my body is trying to tell me (scared the crap outta me) –Better start drinking milk now and continue drinking. Hence go forth and BE HEALTHY!

80. Love Is…

I learnt something today.

My grandmother always complained why our attention is always shone on her. “Why do all of you look after me?”, Grandma retorted in a grouchy manner. “Im old and Im ready to go. So just leave me here.”

I realised many Asian families have a different understanding of what is love. Through these years living in Asia – I come to understand this. Some of us love by giving and not receiving the various acts of kindness. Simple gestures like hugging, kissing, holding your hand, stroking your hair, laying your head down on my lap, singing to a child etc. Such acts of love are rarely seen in some families.

A pity that we are not brought up in a world where love is shown freely and frequently. We don’t hang words of love by our mouths. There is a chinese saying; ” Da shi ai ma shi teng” which loosely translates into “To show love, we have to discipline you. To show care, we have to scold you.”

And that is how we show love here in Asia =)
