Hello there! Alaskie is an alias I use on most Web2.0 platforms. Yes, this includes blogs Twitter, Technorati, Flickr, Digg It, Del.icio.us, Youtube, Crunchyroll and yet-to-be-discovered tools on Web2.0. To set the record straight, my name’s Alaska Ng and most people will ask me where the name [Alaska] came from (!?)
The Origins of Alaska Avalanche!
So here’s a brief – My parents got married and planned to go to Alaska for their Honeymoon. However, that plan didnt materialise and hence to make up for it – Im called Alaska. NAH~ Im obviously pulling your leg! My name has nothing to do with the country but rather it came from its snow mountains. For almost 2 months, I was part of the Group Leaders to lead the Singapore Polytechnic Students’ Union Freshman Camp in 2002. The Camp’s theme was Avalanche and naturally we had to adopt names of snow mountains. Some of us were (to name a few) Olympus, Rockies, Kenya, Kilimanjaro, Everest, Chomo, Andes and mine – Alaskan Ranges therefore Alaska. I decided to stay with the name because of the traits the camp had taught me. Money can never buy those many wonderful, valuable and some tear-jerking lessons – very personal and very ME.
Of course I love my own name LY! (abbre.) My old buddies of 10+ years call me that – hence if you do call me by ly; you have to be a really old friend of mine cos it’d make me feel really weird.
The Younger Alaska Ng L.Y.Many folks do not know this but I play darn good Ping Pong (Table Tennis) when I was younger. Ping Pong trainings stole (most of) my childhood days and hence it became part of my life. I remember the time where there isnt a passing day without trainings at STTA in Toa Payoh. At 10 years old, I learnt to commute to STTA by the train alone and after trainings (usually 9pm) I’d always be the only little girl waiting outside the door for her father to come pick her up while her friends happily went home with their parents. Anyhows – those were my younger-greener-innocent-pingping-playing-days. I dont play it now but I believe the skills are still in me. Ping Pong and Coach Xu will always be in my heart.
I was an average kid spending my education years in Radin Mas Pri, Queenstown Sec, Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and currently SMU. In a nutshell, I loved being in a school known to be notoriously paikia (delinquent). Need to prove a point – Not all students who come from schools like such turn out to be what the society assumes them to be. Hence, after I graduate and nab the dream job, I hope to go back and motivate my juniors!
My time in SP was by far the MOST enjoyable stint in education (very different from SMU). The place my name was born, wonderful friends, wonderful love and challenging experiences honed me into who I am today. If it weren’t for my lecturers and friends in SP (and now God), I honestly will not be able to achieve this much. After graduating with a Dip. in B.A Tourism, (without looking back) I dove straight into the working world. After 1.5 years, Im back as a student in SMU!
What Makes Me Tick (Just 5 for now)
I love anything that has to do with Tourism in Singapore – not because of the upcoming Intergrated Resorts. When I was younger (while playing Ping Pong) I had hoped to be a Tour Guide! My dad used to tell me that the tour guiding route was the least promising job in the industry -obviously I didnt care. My dreams diverted when I was in Jurong Birdpark. Tour guiding seemed less significant as I got more exposed.
Volunteering. Im currently helping out at the Children’s Society – not for the 80 hours. I believe children are gifts from God – Educating and guiding them is one of my life goals.
Tea with Milk. Earl grey, English Breakfast or normal Teh-Ci from Kopitiam. Always perks me up. For a pricier alternative I go with Starbucks.
Hamsters. Im a self proclaimed hamster trainer – good at taming hamsters. [might provide hamster-taming services in the future *chuckles*] I have a female hamster now – Cola. (Chip RIP on 4 July 2008)
Plastics with no sense of concern/responsibility for the less-priviledged and Mother Earth. Stay away from me you plasticated creatures. (the term plastics was coined by my good buddy Fariz)
Another thing. I am a little myopic and extremely terrified of wearing contact lenses hence I carry my specs around. When I am spectacle-less (only during lectures), I cannot see the exact human features from a far (which explains why I walk past pple I know. darn!). So if you see me, do wave to get my attention yah?
